Please enjoy our guest blogger today. She has some great tips on using online marketing successfully.

Everyday more small businesses wake up and realize how crucial it is for them to master Internet marketing if they want to significantly increase sales. Whether you are already dabbling in Internet marketing and learning about it or the concept is new to you and a bit confusing, ignoring it is no longer an option.

Whether you’re a coach or consultant, a service provider, or a bricks and mortar business like a retail shop or restaurant, driving targeted traffic to a well written, compelling website is essential if you don’t want to leave lots of money on the table. There is so much conflicting information to be found about where you need to spend your time and money creating an Internet marketing program that I’d like to help you with a few basic tips.

First of all you are probably not a professional Internet marketer. Professional Internet marketers look for underserved niches and create websites that sell products or information that will serve that niche in some way. They create multiple sites that are not limited to just one topic or market. Successful Internet marketers are masters at finding markets that they may know nothing about, and then finding an expert with knowledge or a product that they can sell to buyers in that market. They are experts at building compelling websites and driving traffic to those websites through online marketing methods and search engine optimization. Many of the courses and programs you’ll find online teach people how to become professional Internet marketers.

Instead, you have a passion or skill around which you’ve built a small or solo business and you simply want to know how to use some of these tactics to drive qualified traffic to your website. So instead of focusing on multiple markets and websites you really only need to focus on a few and they are markets you know well and that are directly related to your business. Here are some simple tips to help you focus on what Internet marketing you need to master for your small business.

Your Website

Preparing your website for visitors is like preparing your house for a party before inviting the guests. If you get lots of visitors but they come and go and don’t take action then you’ve wasted all the time you spent bringing them there. Before you begin traffic generation:

1) Create a website where the content is compelling, customer focused and talks to the visitor about THEIR needs, challenges problems and the results and benefits they want that you can provide. Avoid language like “welcome” and “we do this and we do that”. People want to know you understand what they want, not that you are telling them how great your business is.

2) Include an opt-in form on ALL key web pages. Ask visitors to sign up to receive a free downloadable or deliverable gift that gives them some knowledge or information they really want.

3) Include glowing testimonials on each page. These are a priceless tool to establish your credibility.

4) Have basic search engine optimization built into your website so that you’ll start ranking in the search engines for your most important keyword phrases. Make sure that includes an ongoing program to develop back links to your website.

Driving Traffic

5) The fastest way to drive traffic is to invest in pay-per-click advertising with Google or Yahoo. Money buys speed. You can easily find a local Pay Per Click expert to set up your first ad campaign and tweak it until you’ve created an ad that drives a stream of visitors to your site who are qualified and willing to take action once they get there. The great advantage to PPC is that you only pay when someone clicks on your ad and you can put a limit on the amount you spend each month.

6) Spend time each week on traffic generating activities like some combination of

* social networking (Twitter, Facebook. LinkedIn to start),
* writing and submitting articles to article directories,
* posting comments on highly trafficked blogs in your niche,
* posting to your blog and listing your blog in blog directories, and
* submitting videos to video sites
* submitting audios to podcast sites

Once you decide which activities will work for you, do them every single week. Schedule them into your calendar or train an assistant to do them.

7) Do regular keyword research using the Google Keyword Research tool to find out what your potential clients are actually searching for on the web so you can use those keywords on your web pages and as blog, article and video titles. This is becoming more crucial all the time. A blog post is very likely to come up in the search engine results more quickly than your web page since it has fresh content which the search engines love. Often, keyword research is the missing piece when people tell me their online marketing isn’t working!

Driving traffic isn’t rocket science. It’s not mysterious. It simply requires a bit of strategy and real consistency. So put a plan in place now and in a few months you’ll really start seeing the results of the increased traffic reflected in your sales.

Too much web traffic

Too much web traffic? Never!

So, you have a blog or a website. You have your product or service ready to go. Now you just need customers. So how do you find them online? Well, a good start would be to get them to your website to see what you’re offering. And a great way to increase your web traffic is by using SEO to get your website in front of potential clients or customers.

Here’s some tips on just how to do that:

  • Start with good keywords. Do some research up front. You can use tools like Wordtracker or Google Adwords to see which keywords are going to result in the most traffic to your website.  Then use these keywords in your website content, blog posts, articles, etc.
  • Now that you have your keywords and are using them on your website, start creating content on your site. Try to add at least 2-3 new blog posts a week, and if you can commit to it, add a new post on a daily basis. By consistently creating new content, you’ll keep the spiders coming back to your site and constantly indexing your site.
  • You’ve created content, so now promote that content. Every time you put up a new blog post, talk about it. Send it to your Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn account. Talk about it on any other networking sites/forums/groups you belong to. Bookmark it on the bookmarking sites you belong to.
  • Interact in the social networking community. Build relationships with peers, mentors, prospects. Be a resource of information. Comment on other blog posts, with meaningful comments that add to the conversation going on or to the original post.
  • Finally, submit articles. Write one article a week, remembering to integrate your keywords. Submit that article to article directories.

All of the above will lead to increased web traffic to your site/blog, increased subscriptions to your newsletter or free offer, and ultimately increased sales and increased income!

article writingArticle marketing – what is it and how can it help me grow my business? Article marketing can help increase traffic to your website, and help get you more clients. It does this in a few ways. The first way is that it helps you promote your expertise. Clients buy from people they know, like and trust – so by showing your expertise in an article you are helping to promote all 3 of those. Secondly, when you submit your article to the article portals, they are picked up by search engines. And another way is that each article you submit will have a resource box, which gives information about you, your business, what you do, and a link to your website. All 3 of these reasons add up to increase traffic to your site, which will ultimately increase the number of clients you have. When using article marketing, always keep in mind that the ultimate goal is to get the reader to go to your website and sign up for your newsletter, teleseminar, membership, etc.

So now that you know why you might want to start writing articles, here are 5 steps on how to write effective articles.

Step 1 – You have to figure out a topic to write about. Someone won’t read your article unless they’re interested in the topic. So this is very important to get right. A topic of interest is an issue your target market face and problems they want solved. Some ways you can figure out a good topic is to ask – do some research on social networks you’re active on, see what kinds of questions your target market has. You can do a search for groups your target market belongs to, and then see what kinds of things they’re talking about.

Step 2 – Once you’ve picked a topic, the next step is to write a good headline. It needs to grab the reader’s attention, and create interest so they keep on reading. It also needs to include your keywords, so that when your target market does a search your article will come up. I’ve also found that longer headlines are more effective than shorter ones.

Step 3 – Now write your article. Share useful information, something people can really use. Don’t just make it a sales letter. I’ve read many articles that are poorly disguised advertisements. This won’t work; your article has to actually give out good information. A good tip for setting up your article is to pick 3-5 points to teach about. Then have a short introduction, and a paragraph for each point.

Step 4 – Every time you write an article, you need to include a resource box. This is actually the most important part of the article, because it’s where your call of action is. This is what gets the reader to go to your website and take action.  All resource boxes should include: your name, a link to your website, and a reason why readers should click through to your website (your call to action). This should be a free gift you offer in exchange for their email address.

Step 5 – So now you’ve written an informative, relevant article. Congratulations! Time for the easiest step. Use your article in as many ways as possible to promote your business. Post it on your blog, use it in your ezine, post it on multiple article portals, turn it into a podcast, turn it into a press release. Repurpose it in as many ways as you can think of, and get the most use you can out of every article you write.

So now you have the 5 steps to using article marketing to increase your business, get more clients, and make more money.  Remember, people buy from other people that they know, like and trust. By writing an article and using it to build your expertise, you can show people why they should use your services or buy your product. Like any other marketing technique, practice the steps consistently and you should see an increase in your website traffic.  After going through these steps I hope you have a better understanding of how to use article marketing to grow your business.
